Painting issues and Upholstery.

One step forward...two steps back. Bubbles began to appear in my paint when the car sat out in the 100 degree sun here in Sacramento; one on the right rear quarter, and four on the right front wing. After repainting three times, and consulting with painters, and paint suppliers, body specialists, I finally figured out that the skim coat of filler had not been mixed properly. The bubbles were caused by unmixed filler that produced gas in the hot sun. The unmixed filler was just the size of a pinhead, but produced a quarter sized bubble. All the affected areas were taken back down to bare metal and resprayed, setting me back about a month and giving me a few new grey hairs. Another money saver was to do some of the upholstery trim myself, not hard, just fiddley. Seats and door panels were sent to Sure Fit Seat Covers and I did the quarter panels and other trim. Jim Silva did an excellent job for me. (By the way, NA seats and NB seats are different...NB has a cutout for the door latches.) One more side note on the upholstery for the NB, everything is leather, except for the piping which is Rexine.

Thirty mph light, tires, and top refinishing.
NBs and PBs had a thiry mph warning light, which was the speed limit back in the day. I had the original bezel for this light, but it was cracked. I made a reproduction by brazing a bead on a steel tube, then turned it down on my lathe to match the original, and had it chromed. The lens is extremely rare and hard to find. I got a photo of an original lens from Tom Metcalf and my artistic wife (who does this web site for me by the way), was able to create one made of slumped plastic. Now she can say she helped restore my NB! The top, which came with the car was in very good shape, except for the color, which had faded in spots. I found an automotive fabric spray paint that did a great job of restoring it's original color of black.
